I Was Doing it Wrong!

So…this post is making me blush (😊) just a little. Because what I was doing wrong…should have been pretty obvious. Confused? You should be. In Texas this week I learned two lovely things that will stick with me always.

1. I WAS FOCUSING WRONG.

I literally have been having the hardest time getting my camera to focus where I want it to. I see other people who have similar trouble. But their trouble is generally just getting pin-sharp focus.

My problem was I could not get my focus points to adjust on MY VIEWFINDER. Isn’t that sad?😂 It cracks me up now to think of it. But when Sarah (a lovely photographer friend… go follow her new blog here.) told me that her camera does indeed select points while looking in the viewfinder–I knew it was time to look it up. This picture sums up what I figured out…

focus.jpg

Pretty much you just press the magnifier button while looking in your viewfinder and the focus point will light up. Then you use the dial to find the focus point you want. It’s so fast…and it makes me happy. My life is changed 🙂 . But here is the article I got this tip from for Canon users. Notice when you click it how it’s a dummies article 😀 . That always makes me feel pretty stupid! lol.

And now an experiment showing you the difference between my old (LOOOOONNNGGGG) way of focusing on the live view screen vs. the new way.

These are unedited. The first photo is the new method. I was able to quickly and easily focus on the last screw (which is what I wanted to do). In the second photo the focus is all over the place and it’s a little hard to tell WHAT I was focusing on. Was it a screw in the middle? Or the bigger tool? Or maybe the little screw off to the right?….see what I mean? Both these photos were taken on the same manual settings which you can view if you click on the collage.

2. I WAS EDITING LAMELY.

With the editor I am now privileged to have I could do the basic edits much better than I was doing. My friend from Texas (Sarah again!) has Lightroom as her editor. I have an editor less pristine…but it does some of the same things. My problem was mainly flat images. Here’s an example (I used my reflector for this image).

Thanks to the reflector the light was pretty even in the photo. But my friend from Texas does something which is very simple and never even crossed my mind. She increases temperature! Literally temperature increase is my new favorite thing. I’m pretty sure I did about 0 changes on the second image except temp increase. And just look at the difference. Temp difference corresponds with white balance, btw. Here’s another one of a cat…

For this image I just cropped it…and increased the temperature. I love how it came out. Here’s a tripod timie of me. All that was done here was temperature increase, cropping, and a quick exposure fix.

My thoughts on temperature increase on the whole: I love it! It seems to just really provide a pop. And it seems to make sunlight look more like…sunlight 😀 .

And that’s what I learned in Texas! It was so lovely to spend time with my bestie and rub off eachother in the photography realm. There’s so much to learn. Also Sarah took my senior photos while we were there…and I love em! Here is a sneak peek of one of them that I love.

I couldn’t decide if I liked the color or the black and white one better yet. So I just put both. Click on the collage for full size and resolution.

And a sneak peek of the shoot I did of Sarah while we were in Texas. We edited them using Lightroom.

And again…couldn’t decide which I liked better 😀 😉 .
And a sneak peek from the senior shoot I just did of my friend! Editing is coming along splendidly. I don’t know if I’ll be sharing those photos or not. We’ll see. This is a more creative shot and one she wanted to do. Nice idea, btw. ❤

What do you think of temperature increase?
Do you as a rule like color or black and white better?
Have you ever had focusing trouble?

Vacation Photography, Part 4. {Finale!}

Here we are!

For the final post in this short series. This might end up being the longest…but I don’t know for sure. We were visiting some friends…this post has water, miniature ponies, azaleas, and swinging. Plus some more randomness.

At this moment I am digging texture photos…remember the brick? 😀

My bother got all wet in the creek and then wanted a photo with this miniature horse. My brother isn’t very tall, btw. 😀
IMG_8075.jpg
Aren’t they cute?
IMG_8085.jpg
I love this vertical shot!
IMG_8100.jpg
This cracks me up! A nice size comparison. 😉
IMG_8107.jpg
Oh, and I forgot to mention the ducks!
IMG_8114.jpg
And they were all happy…until my brother chased them. 😉 😀

Bro and sis on the swing. BTW, they aren’t concerned. They were laughing right after this shot was taken.

I got mom to pose for a picture. Happy Mother’s Day, btw. My only regret is the cup she’s holding. I was so eager, I overlooked it 😉 . I do like the diverse background though.

Going home I shot pictures from the windows.

That’s a wrap, folks.

I hope you enjoyed this little four-part series. I could have added tons more than I did…but my memory is really getting small now.

Eva Marie// Newborn Session

It finally happened. Yay!

Eva Marie is about two weeks old now, and I finally got to take some pictures of her today. This really had me nervous, and I really started to feel my inexperience. This is such a new thing for me. I feel like I need to learn how to compose better. I really wish I wasn’t just self-taught. Sometimes I feel like a class would be a lovely thing. But some of these came out good, despite the troubles.

And true to my new resolution…only five pictures! But I hope you like them anyways.

5 Springy Things

…Hello!

I am enjoying Spring, although I was disappointed at the lack of snow to practice portraits in last year. But here we are. A brand new year. Easier to mange golden hours, and soft spring lighting.

(*So. You may be wondering why I haven’t posted any of the newborn pictures yet. The answer is…the shoot has been rescheduled for sometime THIS week.)

And so today is a springy post.

1. Floral Dresses~

IMG_5453.JPG
Especially this one that looks like a dress from the 1960’s. Vintage ❤ .

2. Flowers~

These adorable little grape hyacinths are all over our grass!

What are y’all looking forward to this spring?

What is one photo on your bucket list for this spring? (a newborn session is on mine 😛 😉 ❤ )

Do you like to swim? (Random, I know. But my family just got a YMCA membership and I’ve                                         gone swimming twice!)

p.s. Guess what guys? I am going to be doing a newborn session sometime this weekend! I am so excited and impatient to give newborn photography a try. I am frantically pinning ideas on a special pinterest board here.  So I guess we’ll see if I actually use any of these! 😉

30DPC| Day 17| Movement

Day 17- movement

IMG_3992.JPG

The reason I like this photo is mostly just that the movement wasn’t frozen completely. I actually sort of like the motion blur in this photo. I think it conveys the sense of motion. Besides, most everyone knows that boys play. 🙂 I also like that my main subject is in focus (maybe not in complete focus though 😦 ).

Recent Faves + HDR

Recently…

…I have been busy.

I am here today to just give y’all a little Favorite Photo Lineup plus also some HDR photos!

#1. This is a fun backlit project I did indoors. I have been borrowing books from our local library, and this was one of the photo projects I tried from it.

IMG_4815.JPG

#2. First daffodils of the Spring + a black piece of paper and a dark room. Also included was a desk lamp and a my normal camera body flash. It works OKAY for some things, you see. 😉IMG_4715.JPG

#3. Don’t focus on the person. So the focus is on the weed thingys. 🙂 Got to mess around with the contrast setting on manual mode for the first time (the reason my sis’s hair is so dark!).

IMG_4607.JPG

#4. Freelensing with my 50mm prime lens, using the Bible.

IMG_4617.JPG

#5. Most amazing color in this birdhouse photo! And then the golden sunset got bokehed in the background. ❤

IMG_4845.JPG

#6. The night lantern in daylight…I love glass (just not stepping on it 😉 )

IMG_4867.JPG

#7. Two HDR’s of the birdhouse. The HDR effect was applied in Picasa 3, btw.

IMG_4844.JPG

IMG_4846.JPG

So y’all…I am trying to shorten my posts. I stuck to it today…mostly. After all the limit is up to 10 so…I made it. On normal photo shoots I’ll just post my five best.

Which did you like best?

Have you ever converted any of your photos to HDR?

When is your favorite time of day (or night) to shoot people? (yes, that was an intentional play on words 🙂 )

When is your favorite time of day (or night) to shoot pictures? 😉

30DPC|Day 14|Yellow

Day fourteen- yellow

IMG_2838-001.JPG
I went for a little drama. Focal black and white is fun. It doesn’t so anything overly changing to the picture. It just turns it black and white…except the yellow ball, that is 🙂 .
